Little Things I've Loved This Week #53

Little things I've Loved This Week

This has been such a lovely week so I've got plenty to share today! I booked the whole week off work and it was exactly what I needed. I can't remember the last time I took a whole week off, or at least not without it being sandwiched between night shifts... We'd talked about a foreign holiday, but by the time I got round to actually arranging some annual leave all I really fancied was a week in the countryside. So that's exactly what I got - a week staying just outside of Saffron Walden in Essex on a working arable farm.

Here are the little things that I've loved the past seven days:

Early morning walks round the fields. For some reason, my body clock has been waking me at about 6:30 am recently. At home, I'd been filling this time just reading or listening to the radio, but while I was away I used the time for some early morning wanders with Saffy. It was so peaceful strolling down the farm lane, the mist rising from the fields and the sun coming up between the trees.

Using manual focus on my camera lens. I've been shooting on manual mode for quite a while now, but until this week had still been using auto-focus on the lens. While trying to photograph a narrow blade of grass, however, auto-focus just couldn't cope. So I switched to manual and haven't yet turned back. I love the extra control, the way you can play around with bringing different elements into focus in a way you just can't with the automatic setting.

Dinner recommendations via the blogging world. There's just something I love about the blogging world and 'real life' coming together. Right at the start of the holiday, I posted on Instagram, and it turns out Hannah from Suitcase and Sandals is actually from the place I was staying! She recommended a pub serving Thai food that was not too far away and it turned out to be rather excellent local knowledge - the food was delicious.

My brother making me a caramel frappucino. I'm never quite sure whether he reads these posts or not, but I'll brave it anyway and mention it! It involved many, many spoonfuls of caramel straight out the tin and a lot of advice from my sister about the correct amount of coffee to go in, but it did vaguely resemble a frappucino and he's very proud of that...

Getting up close to goats, sheep and deer. I love animals, but the closest I get to any most of the time is my lovely dog. We visited Colchester Zoo and Mountfitchet Castle where we could pat goats, sheep and rescued deer - and while I'm sure these are probably aimed at children, it was still fun! Now to figure out how to get myself a goat or two in future...

A long run in the Oxfordshire countryside. I was missing the open fields and fresh air already, so took a new route for a run this morning and found myself out in the countryside again. The hills were killer but the views more than made up for it!

What has everyone else enjoyed this week?

  3. I love early morning walks too - they make me feel so calm and in control of my life haha! I love the quietness too.

Also that picture of the single straw is so good - such good use of manual focus! I'm still learning but I love the feeling when I get it right. :) x
