Little Things I've Loved This Week #52

Flowers in jar

For some reason, this week has felt a bit disjointed and all over the place, almost like I can't quite remember when it began. I mean, obviously it started on Monday but it just seems to have been a bit of an odd one!

I think part of this is that my new job is actually almost two jobs. I work two days a week for an adult mental health team and three days a week with an older adults service. When I turn up to work in the morning I have to think for a moment where I'm meant to be that day!

I've also worked my first on-call shifts this week. I did my first on Friday evening, being on call to assess any patients coming in to A&E with mental health problems. Then today I'm covering the wards in the psychiatric hospital. (I've scheduled this post, so hopefully, everything is going alright!)

Anyway, on to the little things I've loved this week:

The patient's relative who assumed I was more senior than I really am. Of course I corrected her straight away, explaining that I'm not actually a psychiatric specialist and am in fact a second year doctor, but it's nice that people seem to think I know what I'm doing! I've been told that in the past she's preferred her relative to be seen by senior doctors, so it felt quite nice that she was happy for me to do the job. Plus it definitely makes a change from people assuming I'm still a student!

No anxiety driving in the dark! I've talked a couple of times about how I'm getting back into driving after really hating it when I initially passed my driving test. I've been doing quite a bit of driving recently, but Friday night was my first time ever driving at night. I had to drive home from my shift, along the motorway, and it felt great to realise that I wasn't really that worried about it at all!

Our little F2s teaching group. We have regular teaching sessions as F2 doctors, and they video-link these from one of the bigger hospitals, out to a small group of us in a peripheral hospital. It's quite nice to have a small group sat round a table, rather than being in the lecture-room - it's a lot more sociable, although we do have to remember that although the microphone is switched off at our end, the camera is still on us...

Fresh flowers. I'm sure these must make it onto this list every time I buy any, but they really do make a room and make me smile!

Texts and making plans with one of my closest friends. We're both quite good at not replying to texts for days or even weeks when we're busy, so I've quite enjoyed actually being in daily contact for a while! Even better we've arranged some fun plans to meet up, something we definitely don't do often enough.

Finding time to read again. Something I'm really good at is leaving far too early for wherever I want to be. I had to drive to a teaching session on Tuesday morning and left what I knew was a ridiculous amount of "contingency time" to get there and park. So it was a good idea to have packed my book and spend twenty minutes just reading in the car before going to my teaching (and still being early for it).

Seeing some of my favourite bloggers coming back. It's nice to know I wasn't the only one taking a few weeks away from blogging! Not both strictly this week, but it's great to see posts from Jasmin and Chloe again.

Hearing that Victoria is back. Yep, apparently it's back on TV tonight! I won't be able to watch it as I'll be on my way back from work, but I'm already excited to catch up on it.

What have you been up to this week?

  1. I'm always ridiculously early for things, my bag pretty much always has a book or magazine in for this reason!
