A Little Cape Town Catch Up

It’s been well over a month now since I arrived in South Africa, five weeks that have simply shot by! Although I’ve documented a few of my days out, I felt a little catch up was somewhat overdue.

For those of you unfamiliar with what I’m up to, I’m spending eight weeks in a Cape Town hospital psychiatry department as the very final phase of my medical school training.

And life is going very well here. Although I go into hospital most days, it’s the most relaxed placement I’ve done, with no assessments, no portfolios – no pressure.

The first couple of weeks we crammed every spare minute with activities – hiking, wine tasting, road trips and sightseeing. More recently though we’ve settled into a calmer pace of life, adjusting to the fact that two months is most definitely longer than your average holiday!

It’s been blissful to head to the beach on a sunny afternoon and simply enjoy a few hours of warm weather, gentle waves and losing myself in a book. I thought setting myself a Goodreads goal of 30 books this year was overly ambitious, but I hadn’t factored in the amount of reading time I’d have on elective!

Although I’ve posted fairly frequent updates to Instagram, I’ve certainly taken a bit of break from my other social media and from blogging. Taking the time away is refreshing and will hopefully be a benefit when I return to normal life…

When I’m not in hospital or on the beach, I’ve been exploring the wonderful food offerings of Cape Town, seeking out the city’s best burgers, bagels, sushi and cheesecakes. Every weekend so far we’ve headed to a fabulous food market – but I’m saving up all the photos for one big post on that so stay tuned!

All in all, my time in Cape Town is serving as the perfect down time after five years of medical school and as a way to relax and recover before beginning work in come August…
