(We'll just ignore the fact that 'mid-twenties' is creeping ever closer...)
One of the great things about being away at university, and away on placement during the week, means that I get to stretch out my birthday all week.
I started early, with dinner out on Monday night with family then packed up my cards and presents to head back to Somerset.
I spent my actual birthday in the hospital, attending a ward round and consultation skills - and had to do the whole standing awkwardly while my group plus two GPs and two actors sang happy birthday to me. (The only time this has been more awkward was that time that I was in the language department at school and all the language teachers appeared from their classrooms singing to me in different languages...)
On Thursday evening I went for dinner at Frankie & Benny's with a few lovely people from my placement group, complete with party hats and caterpillar cake - something of a birthday classic!
Then Saturday I invited a few friends over to watch the rugby and enjoy some cake, champagne and catching up - what better way to spend a weekend?
I made the delicious Bakewell tarts that I know go down extremely well with everyone, and my flatmate baked a Victoria sponge with fresh cream and strawberries. We had spent a while delving through all my cookbooks, but settled on a classic. (Although there was a mad moment when we considered constructing a chocolate castle cake...)
Amazingly we managed to stay pretty restrained with the cakes and saved ourselves for dinner with another friend on Saturday evening. After a short while of traipsing round restaurants in the rain on a Saturday night, we got a table for four at Aqua - a firm favourite and definitely a surprise to find they had space for us! The food was great and it was lovely to spend a couple of hours chatting and enjoying celebrating the fact that we've all passed finals (yes, still celebrating that!).
With busy weeks and minimal weekends left until the end of medical school, I'm really trying to make the most of what time we have and this has been a lovely week of just that :)
