An Evening at the Rugby - Bath vs Gloucester

Rugby match at Bath Rec

With it being Rugby World Cup time, my friends and I were inspired to do something different this weekend.

We might not have got hold of any RWC2015 tickets, but after spending hours watching the games on TV, we decided it would be fun to go and watch a live game.

So the previous weekend (over tea and scones), we did a quick search for local games and found that Bath would be playing Gloucester in the West Country Challenge Cup. Tickets were £25 and there was plenty of availability, so we ordered some immediately.

I loved having something exciting to look forward to at the end of the week - I think it kept us all going through long days of hospital placement!

We decided to make a day of it - with a 5.45pm kick-off, we had plenty of time for lunch and a wander around Bath in the sunshine. I meant to get a few pictures of Bath, but got rather distracted by all the shoe shops we visited...

Lunch was a delicious butternut squash and sultana burger at All Bar One, polished off with brownies and churros shared between the three of us. I've discovered a new tactic in dessert eating - a accompaniment of peppermint tea! Feeling nice and full, we headed across the river to BathRec.

We caught the end of the Red Bull University 7's tournament, and a little of the South Africa vs Samoa game on the big screen before finding our seats.

I've been to a number of live rugby games before, but it's been quite a long time since the last one. I forget how different it is to be by the pitch, watching the action right in front of you. It also feels like things go a lot faster when there aren't video replays all the time! We were also sat right opposite the setting sun, which was beautiful once it had got past the blinding stage!

It was an excellent game, with two well matched sides and some exciting tries - and a 30-21 win for the home team. After the excitement of the afternoon, it was something of a disappointment to get back in time to watch England lose in the second half of their World Cup game against Wales!

We had a lovely day out, the perfect way to focus on something not-medical and to enjoy a game of live rugby. Highly recommended!

Have you been lucky enough to see any of the World Cup games?

  1. I am definitely not a rugby fan haha, I went to one once and almost died of boredom/the cold BUT this does sound like a wonderful day out - I think you need this when you're at uni especially when you're doing something as intense as medicine. Your lunch sounded lovely and Bath itself (somewhere I need to visit), sounds like a great place too! xx

  3. I'm not much of a rugby fan to be honest, but earlier this year I went to my first soccer games during the Asian Cup and it was so fun- atmosphere was definitely better than on TV!

    1. There's definitely a much better atmosphere watching something live. I've never watched soccer before!
